Abajo Mountains - Scenic Drives

All of the roads through the Abajos offer pleasant alpine mountain scenery. Of special note is South Creek Road to the top of Abajo Peak and its great views over southeastern Utah. This is part of the Abajo Loop described below. If you are traveling between Monticello and the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, you can save 15 miles and get some nice views over the park by taking Hart's Draw Road down the northern side of the range. You might also consider taking Forest Route 095 west from the Abajos to Elk Ridge Road described below.

Abajo Loop 22 miles oneway 2 hours
The Abajo Loop crosses the mountains, climbing to an elevation of 9,000 feet, and terminates on the north side of the Abajo Mountains at Utah Hwy. 211 on the way to Canyonlands National Park.

Elk Ridge Road Scenic Backway 48 miles oneway 3 - 4 hours
The Elk Ridge Road Scenic Backway (County Rd. #285, Forest Rd. #079) climbs onto Elk Ridge near Natural Bridges NM. It also climbs to over 8,700 feet in elevation as it passes through the geologic formations known as the 'Bears Ears'.
