From Escalante, this route climbs switchbacks 1,200 feet up Smokey Mountain before winding through the exceptionally rugged desert landscape of the Grand Staircase. Along the route are some good views over Lake Powell and up to Bryce Canyon National Park. It ends at Hwy 89 at Big Water near Lake Powell.

The route is graded dirt and gravel and is 78 miles long oneway. A few sections require a high clearance vehicle. This is very remote desert so be sure to have a vehicle in good working order and bring plenty of water. Plan on spending about 4-5 hrs. The road is impassable when wet.
